About Marie Bloch-Laine
I’m a French-born surface pattern designer and illustrator based in the Chicago area.
After 15 years working in graphic and motion design, I felt a growing pull to return to analog techniques — printmaking, ink, and paint on paper — that I had set aside since my fine art studies. These tactile experiments, full of surprises and happy accidents, reawakened a more joyful and honest connection to creativity. Drawing had been a constant in my childhood, and rediscovering it felt like uncovering a long-lost treasure.
Today, I let spontaneous brushstrokes lead the way, taking cues from nature’s quiet beauty and its perfectly imperfect forms. I hope my work brings a sense of joy and encourages others to notice the small, magical details that often go unseen in everyday life.
My foundation in design brings structure and intention to my creative process, helping me translate freeform exploration into thoughtful illustrations and surface patterns. My designs are well-suited for a variety of applications, from home décor and textiles to stationery and beyond.
